Definition:
Coccolithophores are extremely small, flagellated organisms of the
Kingdom Protista, which are adorned with buttons of calcium carbonate,
called coccoliths. The coccolithophores appear to contribute
significantly to marine food chains by capturing radiant energy and
manufacturing food during photosynthesis. The coccolithophores make up a
considerable portion of the microscopic life in warmer regions, such as
the Sargasso Sea.
