Parameter Tree:
EARTH SCIENCE > CRYOSPHERE > SEA ICE > SNOW MELT
Definition:
The melting of snow on top of the sea ice. Yearly snow melt on sea ice can be
derived from remote sensing satellites such as Nimbus-7 SMMR and SSM/I on the
DMSP satellites. Snow melt onset is defined as the point in time when microwave
brightness temperatures increase sharply due to the presence of liquid water in
the snowpack.
