Boulder Atmospheric Observatory (BAO) Tower Data from the NOAA Environmental Technology LaboratoryEntry ID: OAR0111
Abstract: The Wave Propagation Laboratory operated the Boulder Atmospheric
Observatory (BAO) between October 1979 and November 1989 to study
turbulence in the atmospheric boundary layer. The 300 meter tower was
fitted with a variety of sensor and remote sensing systems. BAO Tower
Data is an archive of the data collected by the BAO. The data consist
of observations spanning 8 levels in the lowest 300 m of ... the
atmosphere, recorded continuously over 10 years at a sampling rate of
10 Hz then averaged down to one sample per 10 seconds for archiving.
A large quantity of the raw data was also archived.
The measurements include fast and slow response recordings of
temperature (platinum wire and quartz sensors, respectively), humidity
(dew point hydrometers), and 3-component winds (sonic anemometers).
Variances, co-variances, turbulent fluxes and spectra were also
recorded continuously. Additionally, data from the tower were
integrated with pressure and wind data collected by a horizontal array
of pressure fluctuation sensors and a surface wind network.
The BAO Tower Data currently reside on 3000 aging 9-track magnetic
tapes in a format that is not easily accessible.
