Bratina Island ponds planktonic community dynamics
Entry ID:
K160_2009_2010_NZ_1
Summary
Abstract:
This study aimed to increase the knowledge of microbial biodiversity and the environmental factors which structure them paying special attention to the stratification transition zones within Bratina Island melt-water ponds. 47 biological and geochemical samples were taken from varying depths in 7 meltwater ponds (Orange, P70, P70E, Legin, Conophyte, Salt and Egg) on the McMurdo Ice Shelf near Bratina Island. All samples were measured for oxygen content, pH, conductivity and temperature. From these samples it is hoped that a detailed genetic fingerprinting analysis will be conducted and linked to geochemical parameters to determine what the main abiotic drivers are in these highly dynamic ponds.
