[ Get Data ]

Abstract: This data set is a spreadsheet resulting from monthly searches for dead birds along randomly selected power line segments in and near the Snake River Birds of Prey National Conservation Area (NCA) in Southwestern Idaho. Data include information regarding causes of mortality, the species of birds killed, and details of the equipment associated with the power poles where birds were found. Dead birds were recovered along 3-phase distribution lines Data were collected between 1999 and 2005.

Purpose: The study was done to assess the magnitude of power line-related mortality in the NCA and to assess retrofitting needs. The work was also linked to BLM efforts to control wildfires and large scale habitat conversions that have occurred in the NCA since the early 1980s as a result of increases in the frequency and severity of wildfires. Altered fire conditions have led to conversion of >50% of the NCAÂ’s native plant communities from native shrubs and bunchgrasses to non-native grasses dominated by cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum) and other annual plants. Habitat conversions and raptor electrocutions are linked because electrocuted birds are a possible source of fire ignitions.
