Summary
Abstract: The dataset consists of data resulting from an experimental
study involving seven cropping systems (three monoculture, two
2-year, and two 4-year rotations) with three rates of N
fertilizer. Data includes dry matter samples and soil samples
with resulting analyses to determine total C and N content. The
dataset was used to evaluate different treatment and crop
rotation combinations and their effects on CO2 emissions.


Collection Organization: University of Nebraska Agricultural
Research and Development Center Agronomy Farm.

Collection Methodology: Dry matter samples for oat, corn,
soybean, and grain sorghum were collected each year after
physiological maturity, weighed, dried and analyzed for dry
matter yield determination. Soil samples were taken in the
spring of 1984 from rotation plots to establish base of
beginning concentrations for soil C and N in each of the
cropping systems. Fifteen cores of 1.8 cm diameter were taken
to a depth of 30 cm for each whole-plot treatment. Each of
these cores was divided into three depth increments and all
fifteen cores were composited by depth. Soil samples were then
taken on a yearly basis in the spring prior to planting, to
evaluate the effects of rotations, crops in rotations, and N
rates. The same procedure was followed except that separate
samples were taken from each N rate subplot within the
whole-plot treatments. Each sample was analyzed for total C and
N using an automatic C and N analyzer interfaced with a
continuous flow mass spectrometer.
