Glacial history of Foundation Ice Stream, West Antarctica

Abstract: The past ice extent and deglaciation history of the Weddell Sea embayment of Antarctica is the single largest uncertainty in relating Antarctic ice volume changes to global sea level change since the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). This project seeks to address this uncertainty by finding and dating geologic evidence of past ice-marginal positions in the Pensacola Mountains, which border the Foundation Ice Stream at the head of the Weddell Sea embayment. We will accomplish this by glacial geologic mapping and cosmogenic-nuclide surface exposure dating of glacially transported erratics. We will then use an ice-flow model to link our exposure-dating results together in a glaciologically consistent way, and to relate them to regional LGM to Holocene elevation changes.

Purpose: First, the results of this project will be of broad interest in a large area of Earth science because of its focus on gathering information needed for accurate understanding of past and present global sea level change.
