PacIOOS Boundaries: EEZs and GeographicEntry ID: pacioos_boundaries
Abstract: These boundaries represent the exclusive economic zones (EEZ) of regions supported by the Pacific Islands Ocean Observing System (PacIOOS), which includes U.S. interests throughout the Insular Pacific, including Hawaii, American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI), the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), Guam, the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI), the Republic of ... Palau, as well as the U.S. Minor Outlying Islands of Baker Island, Howland Island, Jarvis Island, Johnston Atoll, Kingman Reef, Midway Atoll, Palmyra Atoll, and Wake Island. Under the law of the sea, an EEZ is a sea zone over which a state has special rights over the exploration and use of marine resources. It stretches out to 200 nautical miles from its coast. In addition, this dataset includes the following common geographic boundaries: Equator, Tropic of Cancer, Tropic of Capricorn, Prime Meridian, and Antimeridian. Lastly, boundaries between the four states of FSM are provided as well: Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei, and Kosrae.
Purpose: PacIOOS provides timely, reliable, and accurate ocean information to support a safe, clean, productive ocean and resilient coastal zone in the U.S. Pacific Islands region.
