2000 Pilot Environmental Sustainability Index (ESI)
Entry ID:
CIESIN_SEDAC_ESI_2000
Summary
Abstract:
The 2000 Pilot Environmental Sustainability Index (ESI) is an exploratory effort to construct an index that measures the ability of a nation's economy to achieve sustainable development, with the long term goal of finding a single indicator for environmental sustainability analagous to that of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The index covering 56 countries is a composite measure of the current ...
![]() Purpose: To test the feasibility of creating a comparative index of national-level environmental sustainability.

Quality
The CTD data are processed by Mr Mark Rosenberg. The procedures that are followed are to the standard required by WOCE. The CTD's temperature sensors are calibrated at the CSIRO Marine Laboratories. The conductivity sensor to standard seawater using guildline salinometers. Accuracies are ~0.001 degrees, ~0.002pss78, rms residual ~0.002pss78.
Access Constraints
Any one is welcome to use the available calibrated and processed data. We like to know who is using the data, and for what purpose. The main issue is that our own science activities are not compromised.
See metadata records by Mark Rosenberg for access to these data.
