Summary
Abstract:
The TOGA COARE Data Information System is responsible for distributing all information related to TOGA COARE. Link to: http://lwf.ncdc.noaa.gov/oa/coare/. TOGA COARE was a multidisciplinary, international research effort that investigated the scientific phenomena associated with the interaction between the atmosphere and the ocean in the warm pool region of ... the western Pacific. The field experiment phase of the program took place from 1 November 1992 through 28 February 1993 and involved the deployment of oceanographic ships and buoys, several ship and land based Doppler radars, multiple low and high level aircraft equipped with Doppler radar and other airborne sensors, as well as a variety of surface based instruments for in situ observations. The TOGA COARE Workshop Integrated Datasets (TCWIDS) are collections of atmospheric and oceanographic datasets that were presented at the TOGA COARE Workshop in Toulouse, France (1994) and converted to netCDF. All datasets can be viewed and analyzed using Zebra, a software package developed by the NSF-funded Research Data Program within the Atmospheric Technology Division of the National Center for Atmospheric Research. Zebra is used for data integration, analysis, and display of a large variety of datasets and can be obtained together with Zebra documentation and an on-line tutorial at http://www.atd.ucar.edu/rdp/zebra/doc/Intro/Intro.html 1. RELEASE 1 (Feb 95) Release 1 comes on two exabyte tapes and includes the following datasets: Satellite data; Honiara GMS IR and VIS, NCAR Honiara Large-Scale GMS, NCAR Flament GMS IR, CD-ROM by P. Flament and R. Bernstein SST - 4km images, University of Colorado SSMI, Marshall Space Flight Center Distributed Active Archive Center Flight Level Aircraft Data; DC-8, NASA ER-2, NASA Electra, NCAR Electra PMS Analysis, NCAR WP-3D, NOAA/MRD C130, UK Met Office Cessna Slow Data, Flinders Institute for Atmospheric and Marine Sciences Radar Data; WP-3D Lower Fuselage Reflectivity, NOAA/MRD Toga Radar Reflectivity, NASA/TRMM MIT Radar Reflectivity, NASA/TRMM Surface Data; ISS Surface Data, NCAR Buoy and Ship Data; TOGA TAO, NOAA/PMEL IMET (Whoi), Woods Hole R/V Franklin Track, TCIPO Franklin SST, CSIRO Australia R/V Moana Wave, NOAA/ERL R/V Wecoma, TCIPO CTD Data; Vickers, CRSIO Natsushima, JAMSTEC Malaita, National Institute for Water and Atmospheric Research - New Zealand Alis, Centre ORSTOM New Caledonia Wecoma, Oregon State University and University of Hawaii Noroit, Centre ORSTOM New Caledonia Moana Wave, University of Washington Kexue, University of Hawaii Model Data; NMC, NASA/GSFC, LLNL FNOC, NASA/GSFC, LLNL Profiler and RASS Data; Biak 50 MHz, NOAA Christmas Island 50 MHz, NOAA Kapingamarangi - high, low and rass, NOAA Kavieng - high, low and rass, NOAA R/V Kexue - high, low and rass, NOAA Manus Island - high, low and rass, NOAA R/V Moana Wave - high, low and rass, NOAA Nauru - high, low and rass, NOAA R/V Shiyan #3 - high, low and rass, NOAA ISS Sounding Data; Kapingamarangi, NCAR Kavieng, NCAR Manus Island, NCAR R/V Kexue, NCAR R/V Shiyan #3, NCAR Nauru, NCAR LD2 Dropsonde Data, NCAR 2. RELEASE 2 - SUPPLEMENT (August 95) The data are contained on one Exabyte 8mm high density tape, and may be considerered as a supplement to Release 1. The tape contains the following: Satellite data; GMS Satellite images, University of Wisconsin Satellite SST, University of Colorado Sounding data; PSS Soundings (incl. ISS soundings), UCAR/OFPS Flight-level data; P3 flight-level data, UC-Irvine Surface data; ISS surface data, NCAR NOTE: - the GMS satellite images in version 2 cover a wider area and have a higher resolution than the previously-distributed versions. - The CU Satellite SST are also a new version in which the images were converted to netCDF for inclusion in the Integrated Dataset. - PSS Soundings have gone through an extensive quality-control process (and, in some cases, digitization). - ISS Soundings data have been reprocessed to correct humidity errors near the surface. - A processing error introduced some minor errors in the surface data for platform exp3. These errors -- all in the sixth digit or below - are much smaller than the nominal accuracy of the measurements. To order the datasets, either contact Bob Rilling (rilling@ncar.ucar.edu) or the TCIPO.
