Global Volcano Hazard Frequency and Distribution
Entry ID:
CIESIN_CHRR_NDH_VOLCANO_HFD
Summary
Abstract:
Global Volcano Hazard Frequency and Distribution is a 2.5 minute gridded data set based upon the National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC) Volcano Database spanning the period of 1979 through 2000. This database includes nearly 4,000 volcanic events categorized as moderate or above (values 2 through 8) according to the Volcano Explosivity Index (VEI). Most volcanoes are georeferenced to the nearest ...
![]() Purpose: To provide a means of assessing the relative distribution and frequency of global volcano hazard.

Quality
National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC) provides a database of nearly 4,000 volcanic events categorized from 2 to 8 according to VEI from 79 through 2000 nominally georeferenced to the nearest tenth or hundredth of a degree. Global Volcano Hazard and Frequency was based upon the frequency of volcanic events, irregardless of severity, within a 2.5 minute grid cell. The frequency range was classified into 10 classes of an approximately equal number of grid cells, whereby a higher value denotes a greater risk as posed by volcanic activity. Note that areas of no data are not necessarily without hazard risk but may be an artifact of a mask that excluded from analysis those areas where the population density was less than 5 persons per square kilometer and were without significant agriculture.
