Summary
Abstract: Cosmic noise is received at 30/38.2 MHz by a solid state riometer and dual
dipole antenna at Terra Nova Bay, Italian Antarctic Base. These kind of
measurements are useful to determine the ionospheric absorption in the lower
ionosphere and to contribute to the physical-chemical mechanism in the D
ionospheric region.

The 38.2 MHz riometer was installed at Terra Nova Bay during the austral summer
1993-94, while the 30 MHz riometer is working since the austral summer 1994-95.
The riometric station is operating in automatic data acquisition during the
austral winter since February 1995. Another 38.2 MHZ riometer has been
installed at Eskimo Point during austral summer 1997-98 and it's acquiring data
also in austral winter. In the austral summer, the stations operate under
human control while in the austral winter the acquisition is automatic. The
frequency sampling depends from the acquisition period.

Quality
The instrument is a solid state riometer La Jolla at 38.2 and 30 MHz that
measures the cosmic radio noise coming from the outer space. The calibration of
riometer is made once an hour and the sampling is made each second with a final
1-min averaging. The analysis of cosmic noise consists in filtering data and
calculating the ionospheric absorption with the A2 method. To filter cosmic
noise and to calculate ionospheric absorption it is developed a software at
INGV.
