Satellite radar altimetry was used to derive the geometry of the surface of the Antarctic continent. The method is particularly effective over ocean, shelf and flat inland ice. Data from ERS-1 and ERS-2 radar altimeters was processed to produce heights with accuracies of a few centimetres over the ocean areas and 1 - 2 decimetres for the flat ice sheets of Antarctica.
