Abstract: The Birds of the Americas Family Richness Grids of the Gridded Species Distribution, Version 1 are the aggregations of the Presence Grids data at the family level. They are available in 30-arc second (1 kilometer) resolutions. The cell values represent the number of species in a particular family. The input vector layers were produced by a consortium led by NatureServe. The gridding and grid processing are done by the Columbia University Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN).
The data in Band Interleaved by Line (BIL)and maps in Portable Document Format (PDF) and Portable Network Graphics (PNG) formats are available from the from the NASA Socioeconomic Data and Applications Center (SEDAC).
Purpose: To provide provide information on the number of bird species present at a 1 kilometer spatial resolution which can be used in modeling efforts, wildlife conservation planning, natural resource management, policy-making, biodiversity studies and human-environment interactions.

Quality The majority of the waypoint locations were digitised according to positions indicated on a computer screen or 1:50000 map by Greg Hodge or Ben Galbraith (Station and Field Operations) in April to August 2001. Ben Galbraith (Field Training Officer 2000-01) provided the coordinates of
waypoints for the route from Platcha to the plateau and for a drum on the plateau - captured during the ... 2000-01 summer using a Garmen e-trex GPS
receiver. Routes were generated from these points according to instructions provided by Greg and Ben. The routes and waypoints were updated in June 2004 using handheld GPS data and information provided by Martin Benavente, Field Training Officer 2003/04. This update added a route from Breid basin to Trajer Ridge melon and a link from this route to the route east from Platcha hut.
The commonly used pedestrian route to the Mule Peninsula lakes, from Ellis Rapids to McCallum Lake (DQI 398) was eyed in based on field observations made by Ewan McIvor, AAD Environment Officer, in 2000/01.
The routes near Davis Station were derived from:
GPS observations by a field party in April 1997 (DQI 86); GPS survey by John Hyslop in 1994/1995 post processed based on one of the survey marks at Davis Station (DQI 73); and aerial photography (films: ANTC1011, ANTC1030; dates: 2 January, 1994, 10 April 1996) (DQI 530). The data derived from aerial photography was estimated to have a horizontal accuracy of 2 metres.
