Spartina alterniflora production on the vegetated salt marsh surface
is monitored with a non-destructive census method:
individual stems are ... tagged and measured monthly in permanent plots.
Plots are located in the creek bank and in the high tide marsh at
Oyster Landing and Goat Island. The Goat Island high tide marsh has
both nitrogen fertilized and control plots. Stem heights are measured
monthly to the nearest half centimeter, and the weight of individual
stems is estimated from allometric equations derived from earlier stem
harvests. From height measurements and height/weight conversions,
monthly biomass, production and stem density are calculated.
The North Inlet site is a former site in the LTER Program.
Data were collected from 1980 until 1992.
These databases are the result of long-term monitoring begun in the
late 1970s and early 1980s in the North Inlet Estuary, Georgetown
County, South Carolina. The National Science Foundation funded the
Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) program in the North Inlet
Estuary from 1981 to June, 1993.
