National Oceanographic Data Center's Global Ocean Temperature- Depth and Salinity Profiles (NODC-02 & NODC-03) on CD-ROMEntry ID: NODC-HYDRO-2_3
Abstract: This data set, offered by the National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC),
consists of global temperature and salinity profiles taken between 1900 and
1990. Volume 1 contains profiles from the Atlantic, Indian, and Polar Oceans;
Volume 2, profiles from the Pacific Ocean. The CD-ROMs may be ordered
individually or as a two CD-ROM set. Each order will be accompanied by data
access and display ... software provided on a single high density floppy disk.
These two CD-ROMs contain temperature and salinity profile data (as of January
1991) from six NODC archive data files: (1) Oceanographic Station Data, (2)
CTD/STD Data; (3) Expendable Bathythermograph Data; (4) Mechanical
Bathythermograph Data; (5) Radio Message Bathythermograph Data, and (6)
Selected Level Bathythermograph Data. Volume 1 of this set (CD-ROM NODC-02)
contains 1.62 million profiles from the Atlantic, Indian, and Polar Oceans
totaling 451 MB of data. Volume 2 (CD-ROM NODC-03) contains 1.57 million
profiles from the Pacific Ocean totaling 474 MB of data. The data are stored
in ASCII format.
These CD-ROMs are accompanied by data access and display software provided on a
5.25-inch or 3.5-inch high density floppy disk. This software enables users to
selectively retrieve data and to plot and compare temperature-depth,
salinity-depth, and temperature-salinity profiles. Among other options users
may specify the speed with which profiles are plotted and whether or not to
overplot profiles. Additional modules allow users to run simple data
inventories (counts of observations by one-degree squares) and to determine
names of ships and institutions from which the data were submitted.
Using CD-ROMs NODC-02 and NODC-03 and their data access/display software
requires an IBM compatible personal computer system with a CD-ROM reader
capable of accessing compact disks formatted with the ISO 9660 standard;
MicroSoft MS-DOS Extensions for CD-ROM (version 2.0 or higher); 640K of memory,
with at least 500K available; an EGA graphics adapter; an EGA or
multi-synchronous color graphics monitor; and a 1.2 MB, 5.25-inch disk drive or
1.44 MD, 3.5-inch disk drive.
Note: These two CD-ROMs are an enhancement and extension to global change data
coverage of CD-ROM NODC-01, which was an experimental prototype containing
temperature and salinity data for the Pacific Ocean. Comments and suggestions
from researchers who received the prototype Pacific Ocean CD-ROM are reflected
in improvements in these two new discs and their software. Because substantial
modifications were made in the data access and display software, the original
version distributed with the prototype CD-ROM NODC-01 will not operate with
these two new CD-ROMs.
This set of CD-ROMs contains global ocean temperature and salinity
profiles derived from NODC archive data files. It includes oceanographic
station (bottle) data, CTD/STD data, and mechanical and expendable
bathythermograph data. The data span the period from 1900 to 1990. Disc
1 contains 1.62 million profiles from the Atlantic and Indian Oceans.
Disc 2 contains 1.57 million profiles from the Pacific Ocean. The data
are in ASCII format.
Data access and display software is provided on two floppy diskettes.
