&Physical-Chemical Properties and Environmental Fate& Handbook CRCnetBASE 2000 includes over 600 chemicals, a 20 percent increase from the previous version, which synthesised the information from the comprehensive five-volume set of the &Illustrated Handbook of Physical-Chemical Properties and Environmental Fate for Organic Chemicals&. This product brings ... together physical-chemical data for similarly structured groups of chemical substances, which influence their fate in the multimedia environment of air, water, soils, sediments, and resident biota. The compounds covered include monaromatic hydrocarbons, chlorobenzenes, PCBs, polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, polychlorinated dioxins, volatile organic compounds, oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur-containing compounds, and pesticides.

The data may be used to estimate likely environmental partitioning tendencies, ie, how much the chemical is likely to become distributed between the various media, which comprise our biosphere. The results are presented numerically and pictorially to provide a visual impression of likely environmental behaviour. This will be of interest to those assessing environmental fate by confirming the general fate characteristics or behaviour profile. It is, of course, only possible here to assess fate in a &typical& or &generic& environment; thus no claim is made that a chemical will behave in this manner in all situations, but this assessment should reveal the broad characteristics of behaviour. Those evaluative fate assessments are generated using simple fugacity models, which flow naturally from the compilations of data on physical-chemical properties of relevant chemicals.

The hyperlinked Table of Contents allows immediate access to individual chapters and sections, figures and tables, appendices, and indices to individual data sheets of chemicals. Within chapters, links are made between the content-chapter page to data sheets, tables and plots, graphs section, and reference section. The text itself can be changed with a powerful zoom feature, which allows changing the text to a size most readable for the user; the figures and tables can also be viewed separately with the zoom feature.

The reader requiring information on the properties of a specific chemical should first consult the list of chemicals in the appropriate class. Both an index of the common names of compiled chemicals in alphabetical order and a CAS number index are included in this CD, which can be searched throughout with the Hyperlinking tools. It is recommended that the reaser should consult the original references for verification, and determine if a more recent determination has been reported. Attempts have been made to make the compilation complete up to the end of 1997.
