Summary
Abstract: More than 1,600 species and subspecies of animals in the United States are
presently proposed for listing as endangered or threatened. These taxa are
designated Category II Species by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife. In some

Purpose: The occurrence of such problems can be minimized through Taxonomic
Validation, which will do the following:
1. Allow for the most efficient use of resources by ensuring that only valid
taxa are evaluated.

2. Ensure that scientific names used to designate taxa in legal documents
