Summary
Abstract: The University of Washington Joint Institute for the Study of the
Atmosphere and Ocean (JISAO) offers a COADS-based Southern Oscillation
Index 1854-1997 dataset. A version of the Southern Oscillation Index
(SOI) is presented here that is derived from ship-of-opportunity
sea-level pressure (SLP) data contained in the Comprehensive
Ocean-Atmosphere Data Set (COADS). The Southern Oscillation (SO) is an
east-west pressure difference that dominates the year to year climate
variability of the tropics. The SO can be seen in the following map of
the correlation of monthly-mean SLP anomalies with a time series of
the eastern equatorial Pacific SST anomalies.

A &Tahiti& time series is calculated as the average SLP anomaly over
the regions of negative correlations shown above, weighted by both the
correlation value at each gridpoint and by the number of observations
for that gridpoint in each year and month, and is named after the
island at (18S, 150W). A &Darwin& time series is calculated in a
similar manner for the regions of positive correlations, and is named
after the station at (13S, 131E) in northern Australia. The station
data at Tahiti and Darwin have traditionally been used to define the
SO.

The &Tahiti& and &Darwin& indices are calculated using data within
20-degrees latitude of the equator, and the &SOI& index is defined as
the difference of the two, &Tahiti& minus &Darwin.& Indices calculated
using a broader band of latitudes are not as well correlated with
eastern Pacific SST. The choice of latitude band is important for the
&Tahiti& index and not for &Darwin.& The anomalies are with respect to
1950-79.
