Abstract: China Maps Bibliographic Database is an historical collection of bibliographic information for more than 400 maps of China. The information resides in a searchable database and includes title, author/editor, publisher, location, projection, year, elevation, land cover type (forest, desert, marsh/swamp, grassland), vegetation, transportation (roads, railroads), rivers and lakes, spatial coverage ... (provincial, county, township), and language for maps published from 1765 to 1994. The information is available in both English and Chinese (GB Code for Chinese Characters). This dataset is produced in collaboration with the University of Washington as part of the China in Time and Space (CITAS) project and the Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN).
The data in Microsoft Access (MDB) format are available from the NASA Socioeconomic Data and Applications Center (SEDAC).
Purpose: To provide a database of public China maps, searchable by location, scale, content, publisher, and publication date.

Access Constraints The USGS does not own the data from the April 1994 survey, but rather has purchased a Federal Government-wide site license for its use. Data from the December 1994 survey can be distributed now following release by the USGS as an open-file report OFR 02-101. Data from the October 2001 survey can be distributed following release as a USGS publication.
