Executive Order 13158 mandates that the U.S. Departments of Commerce and the Interior "publish and maintain a list of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) that meet the definition of MPA for the purposes of this order." ATTRIBUTE ACCURACY REPORT: Special Projects assumed that the digital data sets originating from the National Marine Fisheries Service Office of Constituent Services were accurate. However, Special Projects tested the accuracy of the data by manual comparison of the source with hard copy print outs if availble. Attributes were further verified using visual inspection.

The boundaries are created with the most recent and accurate boundary information available, but the edges and/or borders of the boundaries may change due to the natural land changes, site boundary modification or higher resolution maps. USE CONSTRAINTS: NOT LEGALLY BINDING: The boundaries contained in these files are spatial representations of the approximate boundaries of sites in the National Marine Managed Areas Inventory (MMA Inventory). The Inventory is being created to support the implementation of Executive Order 13158. The boundaries will support planning and analysis activities that will contribute to the development of a national system of marine protected areas. These boundary files cannot be used to define navigation routes, enforcement efforts, ownership rights, or management responses.
