Systematic survey and abundance investigations of the algae in the meltpools of the McMurdo Ice ShelfEntry ID: K053_1987_1988_NZ_1
Abstract: A qualitative and quantitative survey was made of algae in aquatic habitats on the McMurdo Ice Shelf. The majority of the work was conducted in eight ponds of diverse chemical characteristics in the vicinity of Bratina Island off the northen tip of Brown Peninsula. Samples material removed from ponds and streams at six widely separated locations on the ice shelf were also examined. Detailed ... microscope work was conducted in the field. A simple counting method was used to assess the relative abundance of different taxa in samples of benthic algae for several varying ponds. Individuals of the different species of algae were counted until a total of 100 individuals had been observed. The algae in samples collected along transects at six widely spaced locations on the ice shelf were assessed in a more subjective manner with the abundance of different taxa being estimated on a five point scale. A systematic list was created.

Quality Some cultures may still exist and are held by Landcare Research, New Zealand. The quality of these cultures is unknown.
Field notebooks, diaries, etc are retained by the investigator.
Access Constraints If the cultures are wanted to be transeferred from Landcare Research, the receiving lab needs to have the necessary containment certification (i.e. PC2 containment) and transfers have to be done according to MAF protocol. Otherwise the work needs to be done in the Landcare Research Molecular lab.
