Abstract: Ionospheric observations, using radio techniques, are an important part of the
aeronomic studies that may be carried out in polar zones where the peculiarity
of the physical phenomena, due to the solar terrestrial interactions with the
magnetic field and with the upper atmosphere, are particularly interesting for
research studies and space weather applications. The ionospheric vertical
sounding is performed with a ionosonde installed at Terra Nova Bay (74 degrees
42' S, 164 degrees 6' E) since 1990. This sounding is used for systematic
measurements of electron density of the ionospheric layers D,E,F, by using HF
radio investigation. In the austral summer the stations operate under human
control, during the austral winter sounding and acquisition are automatic.

Quality The scientific instrumentation of the ionospheric station, for the vertical
incidence sounding, is constituted by a Kel Aerospace IPS42 Ionosonde and a
digitized DBD43 system. The ionosonde is constituted by different parts: the
transmitter, the receiver, the frequency synthesizer, the control unit and the
double delta ... decametric antenna. The equipment used is able to synthesize,
transmit, receive and analyze the radio pulses; sounding is made every hour.
The output of the ionosonde is the ionogram and it is shown as a graph of the
virtual height, related to the delay time of the reflection, versus frequency.
Ionogram is digitized and stored in real time by the Kel Aerospace Software.
Subsequently the ionospheric features are scaled and validated by operator, the
ionograms are packed in monthly file and all data (ionogram, alone and packed,
features) are stored.
