Abstract: The Global Rural-Urban Mapping Project, Version 1 (GRUMPv1) consists of estimates of human population for the years 1990, 1995, and 2000 by 30 arc-second (1km) grid cells and associated datasets dated circa 2000. A proportional allocation gridding algorithm, utilizing more than 1,000,000 national and sub-national geographic units, is used to assign population values (counts, in persons) to grid ... cells. This dataset is produced by the Columbia University Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN) in collaboration with the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), The World Bank, and Centro Internacional de Agricultura Tropical (CIAT).
The data in ESRI Shapefile (SHP), Comma-Separated Values and Microsoft Excel (XLS) formats and maps in Portable Document Format (PDF) and Portable Network Graphics (PNG) formats are available from the NASA Socioeconomic Data and Applications Center (SEDAC).

Quality The total area occupied by buildings, tanks (fuel, water, waste treatment), other structures (structures in the Australian Antarctic Data Centre's Geographical Information System structures shapefiles), roads and aeronautical features (helipads and landing grounds)at Casey, Davis and Mawson Stations is calculated. These features are all represented by polygon data in the Australian Antarctic Data ... Centre's Geographical Information System (GIS). Planimetric areas are calculated after the data are projected to a Lambert Azimuthal (equal area) projection. This is done using ArcInfo GIS software.

The majority of the GIS data were captured photogrammetrically from aerial photography flown in January 1994 (Casey), February 1997 (Davis) and March 1996 (Mawson). The data are updated periodically to reflect changes in station infrastructure. Each summer the locations of new features are surveyed.
