Summary
Abstract: Climate Time Machine: Tracking Changes in Global Conditions over Time

This series of visualizations show how some of the key indicators of climate change, such as temperature, sea ice extent and carbon dioxide concentrations, have changed in Earth's recent history. Select a topic, then use the slider bar to observe the degree of change that occurs over time.

Sea Ice:
This visualization shows the annual Arctic sea ice minimum from 1979 to 2007. At the end of each summer, the sea ice cover reaches its minimum extent, leaving what is called the perennial ice cover. The area of the perennial ice has been steadily decreasing since the satellite record began in 1979. (Credit: NASA/Goddard Scientific Visualization Studio)

Sea Level:
Recent satellite observations have detected a thinning of parts of the Greenland ice sheet at lower elevations. A partial melting of this ice sheet would cause a 1-meter (3-foot) rise. If melted completely, the Greenland ice sheet contains enough water to raise sea level by 5-7 meters (16-23 feet).

This visualization shows the effect on coastal regions for each meter of sea level rise, up to 6 meters (19.7 feet). Land that would be covered in water is shaded red. (Credit: Center for Remote Sensing of Ice Sheets)

CO2 Emissions:
This visualization shows the amount of annual carbon dioxide emissions produced by the top 12 nations or regions from 1980-2004. Units are given in thousand metric tons of carbon dioxide emitted from fossil fuel consumption. (Source: U.S. Department of Energy)
* Numbers for 1980-1990 are for the former West Germany
** Numbers for 1980-1991 are for the former Soviet Union.

Average Global Temperature:
This color-coded map shows a progression of changing global surface temperatures from 1885 to 2007. Dark blue indicates areas cooler than average. Dark red indicates areas warmer than average. (Credit: NASA/Goddard Scientific Visualization Studio)

Quality
We have updated the search interface for EDWIP. The new interface
allows users to see more of the data at a glance, and takes advantage
of the relational structure of EDWIP to show summary data from related
files. For example, when you search the Host Classification and
Ecology file in the New EDWIP, you can view summary records of all
associations and negative test results for each host in EDWIP.

For a limited transition period, we are making both the New EDWIP and
the Original EDWIP interfaces available. When you click the SEARCH
NOW! link, you can choose either the New EDWIP or the Original
EDWIP. The Search Tips page contains basic instructions for using the
New EDWIP interface.

Note that data in the Original EDWIP files have not been updated since
June, 2000. New data have been added to the New EDWIP that are not
included in the Original EDWIP.

We are continuing to work on the interface, and as new features and
capabilities are added, we will announce them here. If you have
comments or suggestions that will help us make EDWIP a better
resource, please let us know. E-mail your comments to David Onstad,
onstad@uiuc.edu.
