Abstract:
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Earth Resources Observation and Science Center (EROS) is charged with prototyping systems and software to generate high-level data products from Landsat 5-7 inputs to support the USGS Terrestrial Monitoring activities with Climate Data Records (CDR) and Essential Climate Variables (ECV). The Landsat Ecosystem Disturbance Adaptive Processing System (LEDAPS; Jeff Masek, Feng Gao, and Eric Vermote) has been integrated into a science processing environment for production of a Landsat surface reflectance CDR. This new product is available globally on-demand, and also in ready-made collections based on the Global Land Surveys of 2000, 2005, and 2010.
Purpose: The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is the steward of the most comprehensive satellite data record of the global landmasses. The Landsat archive goes back to 1972 and will continue into the future, providing a valuable time series of the status of the Earth's natural resources and human activity. USGS embraces the potential for this record to support its strategic science goals, and has embarked on an initiative to develop new products meeting international expectations for science-quality, applications-ready, time series of key terrestrial variables. Named Essential Climate Variables (ECV) for their capacity to identify historical change, monitor current conditions, and help predict future scenarios, the new products include leaf area index, land cover, surface water extent, snow covered area, and burned area. USGS is likewise committed to providing full collections of the input Climate Data Records (CDR) needed to derive the ECVs. Surface reflectance and land surface temperature in particular are being integrated with other information through models to produce ECVs. These CDRs and ECVs can provide an authoritative basis for regional to continental scale terrestrial monitoring and predictive modeling. |
