Summary
Abstract: The Orthoptera Species File (OSF) is a taxonomic database of the
world's orthopteroid insects. It contains full synonymic and taxonomic
information for over 25,000 species and genera (all taxa described
prior to 1998) of the Tettigonioidea (katydids and haglids),
Grylloidea (crickets), Acridomorpha (locusts and grasshoppers:
Acridoidea + Eumastacoidea + Trigonopterygoidea + Pneumoroidea +
Pamphagoidea), Tetrigoidea (pygmy grasshoppers), and Tridactyloidea
(sand crickets), as well as images and sounds for many species. A
database for the Gryllacridoidea will become available in the
future. This site also includes a searchable database of entomologists
working on the Orthoptera.

We hope that this site will ultimately become a global database of
information on the Orthoptera and related orders. We invite all
scientists to contribute relevant and related information to the
database, such as images and recordings of species, data on
distribution, ecology, and behavior. We also would like to
incorporate as well gene sequences and other data pertinent to studies
on systematics of the group. Although at this stage the database is
restricted to the taxonomy, soon it will include fields containing
other data.

Information was obtained from http://osf2.orthoptera.org/HomePage.aspx
and related pages.

Quality
The Orthoptera Species File (OSF) is a taxonomic database for the
world's Orthoptera and Saltatoria species. It began in 1988 and, after
more than 10,000 man hours, is nearing completion with the soon to be
published volume 8 to the Gryllacridoidea. It includes full taxonomic
and synonymic information for all species and genera of Orthoptera
s.l. described prior to 1998 (data for 1998 are currently being
entered). The database content is virtually identical to the published
versions of the OSF - it is, however, more current, and incorporates
all changes made to the database since the original publication of the
catalog. This online version of OSF adds another important component
to the database: images and sounds. The most advanced in this respect
is the database of the Tettigonioidea, with nearly 7,000 images (new
images are being added daily), mostly of actual type specimens. The
database of Grylloidea will soon have a similar number of images and
hundreds of sounds. Databases of Tetrigoidea and Tridactyloidea will
have images in 1999. Soon the database will become fully interactive,
allowing registered users to add their own data or make corrections to
existing records. Naturally, all entries and corrections will be
screened by us before incorporating them into the public database. We
encourage users to submit their entries, especially images and sound
recordings. All data submitted by users will be fully credited. Please
contact Piotr Naskrecki if you would like to submit your data. We also
hope to add to the database fields containing data on biology and
distribution of species. Although these fields initially will not
appear in the search layouts, users will still be able to submit their
data.
