Summary
Abstract: Emissions of organic water pollutants are measured by biochemical oxygen demand, which refers to the amount of oxygen that bacteria in water will consume in breaking down waste. This is a standard water-treatment test for the presence of organic pollutants. Source: 1998 study by Hemamala Hettige, Muthukumara Mani, and David Wheeler, Industrial Pollution in Economic Development: Kuznets Revisited (available at www.worldbank.org/nipr). The data were updated through 2005 by the World Bank's Development Research Group using the same methodology as the initial study.
