Pigment Concentrations Measured by HPLC Method and Fluoremetric Method during the U.S. JGOFS Arabian Sea Process StudyEntry ID: USJGOFS_ARAB_PIGMENT
Abstract: A component of U.S. Joint Global Ocean Flux Study (JGOFS) is the
Arabian Sea Process Study. Eleven cruises took place aboard the R/V
Thomas G. Thompson for about sixteen months from October 1994 until
January 1996. These cruises provided seasonal coverage of the annual
monsoon and inter-monsoon cycles in the area southeast of Oman - from
... where the cruises were staged. The monsoons of the Arabian Sea drive
a uniquely intense carbon cycling system, and it is the goal of JGOFS
to better understand the role of the oceans in global carbon cycling.
Pigment concentrations were measured by both High-Performance Liquid
Chromatography (HPLC) and fluorometric methods. Water samples were
collected by both the CTD rosette bottle sampler and the trace
metal-clean (TM) rosette bottle sampler. In addition, on two of the
cruises (TTN-049 and TTN-053), underway fluorescence was measured
along the ship's track.
With the HPLC method, concentrations of the following pigments were
measured from the water samples taken at various depths: chlorophyll
a, chlorophyll b, chlorophyll c3, chlorophyllide a, peridinin,
fucoxanthin, prasinoxanthin, violaxanthin, diadinoxanthin,
alloxanthin, diatoxanthin, zeaxanthin, neoxanthin, lutein, alpha

With the fluorometric method, concentrations of chlorphyll a and
phaeopigments were measured from the water samples taken at various

Underway fluorescence was measured by fluorometer every minute along
ship track during cruise TTN-049 and every four minutes along ship
track during cruise TTN-053. Chlorophyll concentrations are given.
