Summary
Abstract: This data base includes deep-water fishes and fishes collected at northern Chile during El Niño conditions in 1983-84. These fishes were collected and identified by Ismael Kong, who was a highly prestigious ichthyologist in Chile. The fish collection is currently maintained at Universidad de Antofagasta in northern Chile. The region where fishes come from is an important fishery area mostly based on small pelagic fishes, such as anchovy and sardines. However fishes inhabiting the mesopelagic layer are seldom referred to, because they are not part of the fishery landings. This data set includes those fishes from deep water (>200 m) from this highly productive upwelling zone and some species normally found upon the El Niño conditions.
