Abstract: This experiment began in 1967 at a site that was originally
shrubland. The project consists of one rotation: Pearl
millet-wheat. Treatments = 1) Absolute control, 2) Farm yard manure
added, 3) N-fertilizer applied, 4) Cultivation without pesticides, 5)
Incorporation of root stubble.
The climatic region of the site is Warm Temperate SubTropical. The

Minimum annual rainfall: 139.4 mm

The soil is described as a Fine loamy aridic ustochrept (USDA).
The measurements made, methodology, and frequency are listed below:
a) Vegetation measurements made and frequency
Total above-ground dry matter: Every season
Nitrogen content of offtake: Every 2 years.
Phosphorus and potassium offtake in above-ground dry matter every 2
b) Soil sampling
Time zero soil measurements taken. Samlping depth: 0-15cm, samples
not stored, measurements taken: pH, organic C, CaCO3, Available N, P and K.
Details of soil sampling method: Method of soil sampling: Auger.
Number of cores: 4. Area of plot sampled: Borders of plots not
sampled. Distribution of samples: Random. Soil is separated into layers
Details of measuring depths and soil layers: Depthwise sampling
done at 0-15, 15-30, 30-45 cm every five years. Normally 0-15cm soil
is collected every other year.
c) Soil measurements made and frequency
Total carbon: Every 2 years
Method of measuring total carbon: Oxidizable C is determined by
wet-digestion method of Walkley and Black (1934) Soil Sci. 37:
29-38. This method is 60-70% efficient.
Ammonium nitrogen: Every 5 years
Method of measuring ammonium nitrogen: Distilling ammonia by
alkaline permanganate method of Subbiah & Asija (1956) Current Science
Soil bulk density or weight: Every 5 years.
Method of measuring soil bulk density or weight: Soil samples are
collected with a core sampler and dried to a constant weight. The
ratio of dry weight of soil to core volume will give bulk density.
Other nutrients: DTPA extractable Zn, Mn, Fe, Cu estimated in
1987-88. Available P and K were estimated at an approximate frequency
of 5 years.
Other measurements: Plant (grain and straw) samples analysed for
N, P & K content. Occasionally, soil samples are analysed for
infiltration rate and other physical parameters.

Nearest meteorological station to the site: Meteorological Laboratory,
CCSHAU, Hisar which is 1 km from the site at coordinates
75deg.46min. East, 29deg.11min. North. The meteorological station is manual.
