Collection Methodology: Alternative quarantine treatments for
methyl bromide fumigation are being tested to disinfest
commodities of pests. Gamma radiation with 150 gray from a
cobalt 60 source provides quarantine security against eggs and
larvae of sweet potato weevils in sweet potato roots. Doses at
150 gray and 180 gray sexually sterilize males and females,
respectively. A dose between 250-400 gray will provide
quarantine security and prevent development of blueberry
maggots. Preliminary results suggested it might be possible to
sterilize all plum curculio life stages with 160 Gy. Ohmic
heating of fruits showed that the interior of a fruit could be
heated to a higher temperature than the surface. The combination
of coating plus 300 ppm dimethoate gave 93-98% less survivors
than either coating or dimethoate alone.
