Abstract: The purpose of "Mechanism of Pollution-Induced Reductions in
Cold Tolerance of Forest Trees" is to develop a better
understanding of the mechanism(s) responsible for documented
reductions in cold tolerance of red spruce as a result of
exposure to acidic cloud water, and specifically, the
interconnections between pollution-induced calcium pertubations
and ... freezing sensitivity.

Collection Methodology: Red Spruce seedlings growing outside
were watered with nutrient solutions containing four levels of
calcium in order to establish four groups of seedlings with four
levels of foliar calcium. Following the establishment of these
groups, seedlings from each group were exposed to high and low
soil aluminum and acidic and non-acidic mists. The impacts of
calcium perturbations alone and in combination with soil
aluminum and acidic mist treatments on membrane stability, dark
respiration, photosynthesis, growth, and freezing sensitivity
