Response Strategies To Climatic Change In Management Of European Forests (SilviStrat)Entry ID: EFI_SilviStrat
Abstract: The Silvicultural Response Strategies to Climate Change in Management of
European Forest studies adaptive management strategies to enhance of carbon
sequestration in the European forests and to mitigate adverse impacts of the
global climate change on them as regards the following issues:
-Analyse direct and indirect impacts of present forest management regimes and
operations on sequestration and ... storage of carbon in European forests, and to
develope a better understanding of how management regimes and operations could
be improved to maintain a sustainable forest production at the same time as the
C sequestration capacity of European forests is increased under current and
changing climate conditions.
-Analyse adaptive forest management strategies aimed at reducing the impacts of
drought and other adverse effects of climate change.
-Assess how adaptive forest management strategies for increased C sequestration
in the major European forest types might affect costs and returns at the
management unit level.
-Assess how to optimise management operations in representatived management
unit of major European forest types with the goal of increasing C sequestration
and maintaining a sustainable forest production under changing climatic
-Estimate the potential of forest management at the European scale on C
sequestration and mitigation of climate change induced impacts.
The basic strategy of the Project is to analyse possibilities to adjust current
forest management strategies to improve the carbon sink capacity and the
adaptation of the forests to the expected changing environmental conditions.
Existing simulation models available amongst the Participants will be applied
to estimate the potential of adaptation and mitigation strategies in forest
management of European forests.
This Project is divided into nine Work Packages (Work Package with the leading
