Abstract: SITE HISTORY
For more than 20 years before the experiment began in 1974, paddy rice
was the crop grown on the experimental site. The experimental
site is located in the Pintung Plain of Southern Taiwan. In the East of
the site there is a mountain about 800 meters in elevation. In other
adjacent areas are large areas of paddy rice. The rotation was as
follows: 1st rice (February to May), 2nd Rice ... (June to September),
lugume crop (soybean or aduki bean - October to January). The experiment
was terminated in 1994 after which bananas where planted.
About 5 years before the experiment terminated, all adjacent fields were
converted from paddy fields to upland crops.
LAND USE AND TREATMENTS
Single land use: Rice-Rice-Soybean rotation. 12 treatments as follows:
1) No lime, conventional N fertilizer, 2) No lime, Reduced N
fertilizer, 3) No lime, Conventional fertilizer, Residue retained, 4) No
lime, Reduced N fertilizer, Residue retained, 5) Lime at 2 mt/ha,
Conventional N fertilizer, 6) Lime at 2 mt/ha, Reduced N fertilizer, 7)
Lime at 2 mt/ha, Conventional N fertilizer, residue retained, 8) Lime
at 2mt/ha, Reduced N fertilizer, residue retained, 9) Lime at 4mt/ha,
