Abstract: The primary objective of "Determination of the Environmental
Fate and Transport of Methyl Bromide" is to determine soil
reactions, the transport characteristics, volatile emissions and
mass partitioning of methyl bromide to assess the environmental
impacts of the agricultural use of methyl bromide. This research
will provide the necessary information to determine,
scientifically, the environmental ... effects from the agricultural
use of methyl bromide.

Collection Methodology: Field experiments have been conducted to
quantity methyl bromide emissions. The field studies were
conducted on a 10-acre plot; the plot was covered with a tarp
for the first experiment, and the soil left bare for the second
experiment. The results of the first experiment, in which a mass
balance was conducted, indicated that approximately 40% of the
applied methyl bromide volatilized into the atmosphere. Very
preliminary analyses of the data from the second (non-tarped)
experiment indicate that approximately 30-40% of the applied
methyl bromide volatilzed. Laboratory column studies have
demonstrated that methyl bromide emissions can be siginificantly
reduced by the addition of water to soil.
