Summary
Abstract:
Physical and chemical properties of boundary layer aerosols have been measured at the Finnish Antarctic research station Aboa in Queen Maud Land (73 degrees 03' S, 13 degrees 25' W). The measurements have been conducted in austral summers 1997/1998, 1999/2000, 2000/2001, 2003/2004, 2004/2005 and 2006/2007. Measurements and data: 1997/98 Time resolution: 48 hours ... - 2-stage filter samples (ion chromatographic analyses) - 12-stage impactor samples (ion chromatographic analyses) Time resolution: 10 min - 1 hour - particle number concentrations 1999/2001 and 2000/2001 Time resolution: 10 min - 1 hour - particle number size distributions, particle size range 5-800 nm - particle number concentrations - light scattering and backscattering coefficient - black carbon - surface ozone concentrations Time resolution: 24 to 48 hours - 2-stage filter samples (ion chromatographic analyses) - 12-stage impactor samples (ion chromatographic analyses) - High-volume samples (ion chromatographic analyses, organic and elemental carbon analyses, Pb-210 activity concentrations) Non-regular measurements - aerosol optical depth, manual sunphotometer, not measured every day During the 1999/2000 expedition measurements were also conducted on the Atlantic Ocean on the way to Antarctica onboard the Russian research vessel Akademik Fedorov, used for the transport of the expeditions. 2003/2004 Time resolution: 10 min - 1 hour - particle number concentrations 2004/2005 Time resolution: 10 min - 1 hour - particle number size distributions, particle size range 10-800 nm - particle number size distributions, particle size range 0.3-15 µm - particle number concentrations - air ion number size distributions, size range 0.5 - 40 nm During 2004/2005 expedition field measurements of number concentrations and size distributions were conducted within about 150 km around Aboa. 2006/2007 Time resolution: 1 min - 1 h - particle number size distributions, particle size range 3-1000 nm - particle number size distributions, particle size range 0.3-15 µm - particle number concentrations - air ion number size distributions, size range 0.4 - 40 nm - hygroscopic properties of aerosol particles; 10, 25, 50 and 90 nm - light scattering and backscattering coefficient - black carbon Time resolution: 48 hours - 2-stage filter samples (ion chromatographic analyses) - 12-stage impactor samples (ion chromatographic analyses) - High-volume samples, PM2.5 (ion chromatographic analyses, organic and elemental carbon analyses) Non-regular measurements - aerosol optical depth, manual sunphotometer, measured on sunny days, 3-6 times per day
