Summary

Abstract:
The Genesis and Rapid Intensification Processes (GRIP) experiment was a NASA Earth science field experiment conducted 5 August – 30 September 2010 to better understand how tropical storms form and develop into major hurricanes. NASA used the DC-8 aircraft and the Global Hawk Unmanned Airborne System (UAS) configured with a suite of in situ and remote sensing instruments that were used to observe and characterize the lifecycle of hurricanes. This campaign also capitalized on a number of ground networks and space-based assets, in addition to the instruments deployed on aircraft from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida( DC-8) and NASA Dryden Flight Research Center, California (Global Hawk). The GRIP WB-57 Navigation data was collected on flight days occurring between July 13 , 2010 to September 17, 2010 during the GRIP field campaign. The NASA WB-57 is a weather research aircraft capable of operating for extended periods of time(~6.5 hours) from sea level to altitudes well over 60,000 feet (12 miles high). During the GRIP campaign the High-Altitude Imaging Wind and Rain Airborne Profiler (HIWRAP) instrument was flown aboard the WB-57. Both data in IWG1 format and error logs are part of this dataset. |
