Abstract:
The Civil Aircraft for the Regular Investigation of the atmosphere Based on an Instrument Container (CARIBIC) is an aircraft based scientific project. Before take-off a special air freight container filled with scientific equipment is loaded into the cargo compartment of a passenger aircraft. The container is connected to the outside air through a system of tubes. Instead of suitcases this CARIBIC container contains scientific equipment. Whilst passengers enjoy their flight, all the equipment automatically and quietly carries out thousands of measurements. Each flight is a complete experiment. The data records provided with a set of self-explanatory header lines are stored into the database. Dataset-name and -acronym contain a string _Vxx which stands for the version of revision - see above. Version V02 has more convenient header layout and a few obvious mistakes corrected in the data. Thus the highest version is recommended for download, lower versions serve as collateral. Users must first register with CARIBIC to download the data. A more powerful package than the one deployed on the 1997-2002 flights, began deployment in December 2004 on the Lufthansa German Airlines Airbus A340-600. Data sets consists of: Carbon Monoxide Ozone Gas chromotagraphy analysis of: Carbon monoxide (CO) Methane (VH4) Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Nitrous Oxide (N2O) Sulfur Hexafluoride (SF6) Ozone (O3) Isotopes of CO and CO2 Non-Methane Hydrocarbons (NMHC) Meteorological parameters including: Temperature Potential Vorticity Potential Temperature Equivalent Potential Temperature Wind components: u, v Wind Speed, Wind Direction Water vapor volume mixing ratio Water vapor (H2O) Relative humidity Specific Humidity Cloud Cover Cloud cover water content Cloud cover ice content |
