Black Carbon in Arctic Snow, Samples from Vestfonna, Svalbard - Kinnvika (Norway)Entry ID: KV-BC-Spring2008
Abstract: Transport of atmospheric contaminants into the Arctic.
Black carbon data from snow samples across the Vestfonna ice cap, Svalbard.
Data set organization
Excel file, organized by sampling site and date.
Methodology or analytical tools
The samples are transported and stored frozen. Samples are melted and filtered through quartz fibre ... filters in the laboratory. The filter substrates are analysed for elemental and organic carbon using the Thermal/Optical Carbon Aerosol Analyzer with NIOSH 5040 protocol.
Units and unit resolution.
Analysed carbon in µcm-2, which is converted to a carbon concentration µl-1. Resolution: 10-2.
Purpose and/or intended use of data.
Mapping of light absorbing carbonaceous particles in Svalbard snow. Chemical transport model validation. Process studies for evolution of the snowpack impurity content.

Quality Potential problems:
Contamination due to use of snow scooters, carbon losses from melted sample to the walls of the container.
Quality control mechanisms:
Sampling upwind of any potential contamination source, samples are kept frozen for transport and storing.
