Magnetotelluric measurements of the earth's crust beneath the Wright Valley
Entry ID:
K042_1983_1984_NZ_3
Summary
Abstract:
A magnetotelluric study was made of the earth's crust beneath the Wright Valley. Fluxgate magnetometers were used to record 3 component magnetic field variations and lead electrodes, 150 meters apart, were used to monitor 2 component surface electric fields. Recordings were made south of the old Vanda Stations, Lake Vanda, Wright Valley from 0.00 NZST 1/12/83 to 07.00 NZST 5/12/83. During this time a K5 geomagnetic storm was in progress and some good records were obtained. A study was also commenced on the propogation of very low frequency radio waves in the earth-ionosphere waveguide. A VLF antenna was set up at Arrival Heights and the field strength of VLF signals broadcast by the station NWC at ta frequency of 22.3 kHz was monitored.
