National Aggregates of Geospatial Data Collection: Population, Landscape, And Climate Estimates (PLACE)
Entry ID:
CIESIN_SEDAC_NAGDC_PLACE
Summary
Abstract:
The Population, Landscape And Climate Estimates (PLACE) dataset contains estimates of national-level aggregations of territorial extent and population size by biome, climate zone, coastal proximity, elevation and slope, a compendium of nearly 300 variables for 222 countries. This dataset is produced by the Columbia University Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN).
The data in Microsoft Excel (XLS) format are available from the NASA Socioeconomic Data and Applications Center (SEDAC). Purpose: To provide tabular data on environmental conditions (elevations, climate, coastal) in which people reside.

Quality
The MLS NRT data are not as accurate as the retrievals that constitute the standard MLS products, but nevertheless the results are of scientific use and track the standard MLS products with reasonable fidelity. Zonal mean differences between the NRT and standard product v2.2 results are typically within 5 to 10% for pressures between 68 and 0.2 hPa. Comparisons between the two sets of stratospheric retrievals over many days reveal significant differences mostly for pressures of 100 hPa and larger.
