Summary

Abstract:
Compressed ARC Digitized Raster Graphics (CADRG) is to be developed as a jointly coordinated common compression of ARC Digitized Raster Graphics (ADRG) for use in any application requiring rapid display of a map image or manipulation of the image of a map in raster form. CADRG achieves a nominal compression of 55:1 over standard NIMA ADRG products. Digitized Raster Graphics (ADRG) are digital raster representations of NIMA's paper graphic products. The information content of CADRG is the same as that of the base map or chart. Multiple scale source maps are in CADRG format. Area coverage for CADRG will match that of ADRG source products. Standard paper maps/charts are converted into digital data by raster scanning and transforming the map image into the ARC system frame of reference. Data collected from a single chart/map series and scale will be maintained as a worldwide seamless database of raster graphic data with each pixel having a distinct geographic location. For distribution ADRG data is divided into geographic data sets called Distribution Rectangles (Drs). One or more Drs fit onto a single CD-ROM. The defined boundary of a Dr is the minimum bounding rectangle that encloses all the input source graphics contained in the DR. Raster graphic data from adjacent DR's abuts exactly to provide unbroken coverage. However, gaps in coverage may occur as a result of datum transformations and incomplete source graphic coverage. Overlay may occur with unique maps such as 50,000 topographic line maps where coverage is country oriented. The information content is the same as the hardcopy map. Data files contain scanned image data. Header records for source definition as well as a reduced resolution image overview file for the entire CD-ROM. CADRG/ADRG has been produced from paper maps in the following scales: 1:5,000,000 General Navigation Chart(GNC), 1:2,000,000 Jet Navigation Charts(JNC), 1:1,000,000 Operational Navigational Charts (ONC), 1:500,000 Tactical Pilotage Charts (TPC), and 1:50,000 Topographic Line Maps(TLM), City Graphics, Combat Charts, and Nautical Charts. Stock numbers for existing CADRG and ADRG are listed in the Aerospace Products Semiannual Bulletin Digest (stock number CATP1UBD) and topographic Products Semiannual Bulletin Digest (NIMA stock number CATP3V01UBD). In most cases, the CADRG/ADRG stock numbers directly correspond to the sheet number of the paper map stored as CADRG/ADRG on the CD-ROM. In the case of JOGs (normally four are scanned into one CD-ROM), paper map stock numbers can be cross referenced to ADRG stock numbers using listings in the Aeronautical Products Semiannual bulletin Digest for JOGs and in the Topographic Products Semiannual Bulletin Digest for TLMs. This cataloging system is being replaced with a dedicated ADRG catalog. The Coordinate Reference System is the ARC (equal Arc second Raster chart/map) System (Rectangular Projection). In the ARC reference system the world is divided into 18 latitude zones to obtain equal spacing with minimal distortion. CADRG and ADRG is releasable to DoD, its contractors, and other Executive Agencies supporting DoD activities. Some small scale CADRG may be released to the public. Purpose: Provide a general purpose data set of support data and computer readable digital images of hardcopy graphic products for map displays on command and control systems, mission planning systems, and aircraft cockpits. |
