CO2 Surface Exchange Data Sets Used in the Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) 3-Dimensional (3-D) Global Tracer Transport Model, CDIAC/DB-1006Entry ID: FUNG_CO2_INPUT

These data sets represent the input files used in simulations of
atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) using the Goddard Institute for Space
Studies (GISS) 3-D global tracer transport model. These data sets are
available electronically from GISS and from the Carbon Dioxide
Information Analysis Center (CDIAC). There are 6 data sets (four CO2
data ... sets avaiable from GISS and CDIAC and two supporting data sets
available from GISS only):
CO2FOS.MRL: This data set consists of CO2 released from fossil fuel
burning based on data provided by Marland (1989) by country. The data
was distributed for each country according to the population density
in each 1 x 1 degree latitude-longtiude grid cell for that
country. The data in each cell is in units of kg C/m^2/y. More
extensive data from Marland is available from CDIAC.
CO2DEF.HOU: This data set consists of CO2 released from land-use
modification primarily tropical deforestation for the year 1980. The
dataset is based on Houghton, et al (1987) which calculated CO2 flux
by country. The data were distributed among the area of the country on
a 1 x 1 degree latitude-longitude grid at the resolution of the
country data base. The data in each cell is in units of kg
C/m^2/y. Note: The data set by Houghton, et al (1987) has been updated
- see Houghton (1991).
CO2OCN.TAK: This data set consists of CO2 exchange with the ocean. The
data is the change in partial CO2 (delpCO2) reported in Broecker, et
al (1986) multiplied by gas exchange rates based on 14 degrees C. The
data was used in Tans, et al (1990). The data were distributed on a 4
x 5 degree latitude-longtiude grid. The data in each cell is in units
of kg C/m^2/y.
CO2VEG.JAN...CO2VEG.DEC: This set of 12 monthly data sets consists of
CO2 exchanges with natural ecosystems (vegetation and soils). The data
were used in Fung, et al (1987) and are distributed on a 4 x 5 degree
latitude-longitude grid. The data in each cell is in units of kg
The following are supporting databases available from GISS:
CNTRY1X1: This data set gives the global distribution of
countries/political subunits as of 1993. A companion data set
'CNTRY1X1 CODE' associates each code with its country/subunit. There
are a total of 354 codes with unique entries for 186 countries along
with a total of 168 subdivisions. The data set was used to distribute
the data in CO2DEF.HOU.
POP1X1 1984: This data set contains human population densitiy for
1984. The resolution the data set is 1 x 1 degree latitude-longitude,
although the data is distributed by country according to the
resolution of the data in CNTRY1X1. Two types of population data were
used: population for each country and population for cities. The
dataset is similar to the dataset based on Matthews (1983). The
database was used to distribute the data in CO2FOS.MRL.
