Northern Hemisphere Temperature Reconstructions from Tree-Ring Chronologies and Major Volcanic Eruptions, WDC Paleoclimatology

Summary
Abstract: This data set consists of two time series representative of Northern Hemisphere
growing season (April-September) temperatures for the period 1400-1994. The
data were derived from means of 383 maximum latewood density tree-ring
chronologies from the northern boreal forest. Both time series are given in
dimensionless standardized anomalies (from the 1881-1960 mean), and one has
also been re-scaled to give an estimate of Northern Hemisphere land and marine
temperature anomalies.
The data suggest that large explosive volcanic eruptions produced different
extents of Northern Hemisphere cooling during the past 600 years (Briffa, et
al., 1998). The largest volcanic explosions since 1400AD are also included
giving the name of the volcano, latitude/longitude and Volcanic Explosive Index
(VEI).
