Summary

Abstract:
An analogue data acquisition system (ADAS), designed to collect time-stamped, time series data from any analogue signal is currently used to log data from the riometer, magnetic pulsations and fluxgate magnetometers. Data collection is synchronised to a GPS (global positioning system) chronometer allowing data to be sampled with a time resolution of one millisecond, allowing accurate propagation delays to be estimated from data recorded at multiple sites. A riometer is essentially a wide-angle radio telescope that is used for studying the aurora. It measures the combined signals at 30MHz of the radio stars in its wide (60 degree) vertically oriented beam. The riometer data consists of 30 MHz signal relative intensities determined using a vertically oriented yagi dipole antenna at 10 second sample intervals. Only raw data are generally available. Calibration signals at ~1630UT include a 'zero' reference level. This metadata record also incorporates data from ASAC project 22 (ASAC_22) - Observatory Operations: Riometers, and ASAC project 23 (ASAC_23) - Observatory Operations: All Sky Cameras. To read the ADAS data format, special software must be downloaded and installed. This software is available for download from the url given below. Magnetometer data are supplied in two formats. 1) raw data in ADAS format, and 2) processed data which can be viewed with a text editor. Processed data are held as 1 second averages. It is recommended that processed data be used. At the end of each processed data file, are further quality statements, and information on how to interpret the dataset. For more information on the procedure used to process the data, see ANARE Research Notes 146. The relevant chapter, chapter 30, is available for download at the url given below. For magnetometer data from Macquarie Island or Mawson, please contact Geoscience Australia (www.ga.gov.au). See also the World Data Centre at IPS Radio and Space Services (see the link below), for more finely processed data. The fields in this dataset are: Magnetometer: Station Date Latitude Longitude X component - positive geographic North (horizontal) Y component - positive geographic East (horizontal) Z component - positive downwards (vertical) Riometer: Station Date Digital value signal of cosmic noise at 30 MHz |
