Abstract: This data set is the Extended Reconstruction of Historical Sea Surface
Temperatures (SST) Using improved statistical methods (1854 to
present). The extended reconstructed sea surface temperature (ERSST)
was constructed using the most recently available Comprehensive
Ocean-Atmosphere Data Set (COADS) SST data and improved statistical
methods that allow stable reconstruction using sparse data. This
... monthly analysis begins January 1854, but because of sparse data the
analyzed signal is heavily damped before 1880. Afterwards the strength
of the signal is more consistent over time.
This new extended reconstructed SST data set replaces the
"Reconstructed Reynolds SST", which was removed from the CDC archive
on 1 April 2003.
The original Reynolds reconstructed SST data is available from
NOAA, Climate Diagnostics Center.
