Summary
Abstract: The Extreme Weather Sourcebook is an index to the economic and
other societal impacts related to hurricanes, floods, tornadoes,
lightning, and other United States weather phenomena. The hurricane
information details where each state ranks in the number of hurricanes
affecting it and the total normalized damage in millions for
1900-1999. The flood and tornado information presents each state's
rank in the cost of damage and the average cost per year.

There is also tornado, hurricane, and flood damage (1955-1999)
composite information. This data is also includes each state's rank
in the cost of damage and the average cost of damage per year.

The lightning data lists the numbers of fatalities due to lightning
in each state for 1959-1994. In addition the states rank and rate of
lightning fatalities is included.

Other information include the following for 1950-1997:

Annual Average Number of U.S. Hail Days
Annual Number of Hail Catastrophes
Insured Property Loss from Hail Catastrophes
Crop-Hail Insurance Loss Cost Values
Crop-Hail National Losses
Annual Average Number of U.S. Hail Days Compared to Hail Catastrophes
% U.S. Experiencing 7-Day Rainfall Amounts Exceeding 1-Year Recurrence
Intervals
% U.S. with Number of 2-Inch Rainfall Periods Above Normal Frequency
Annual Average Number of U.S. Thunderstorm Days
Annual Number of Thunderstorm Catastrophes
Intensity of Thunderstorm Catastrophes
Thunderstorm Insured Property Loss
Annual Number of Winter Storm Catastrophes
Insured Property Loss from Winter Storm Catastrophes
Annual Wind Storm Catastrophes
Insured Property Losses from Wind Storm Catastrophes
Annual Lightning Deaths per Million Population
Annual Number of Catastrophes
