Summary
Abstract: This report addresses the taxonomic validity of 63 taxa of freshwater bivalves
(Sphaeriidae and Unionidae) and 75 species of freshwater gastropods (Ancylidae,
Planorbidae, Pleuroceridae, Viviparidae) on the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Category
2 Candidate list.

Purpose: Assessment of taxonomic validity which consisted of:
1. Designation of each taxon as: (a) valid as listed; (b) synonymous with
another taxon; (c) potentially polytypic; or (d) impossible to evaluate without
extensive taxonomic study.
2. Correction of errors in nomenclature.
3. Identification of individuals qualified to carry out the taxonomic studies
required.
