Abstract:
DATA ACCESS Drifter data are available upon request from NOAA's National Oceanographic Data Center in Silver Spring, MD http://www.nodc.noaa.gov. The data are also archived at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in Boulder, CO http://dss.ucar.edu/pub/toga_coare/ and at MEDS in Ontario, Canada. http://www.meds-sdmm.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/ ... The TOGA COARE Data Information System contains information about TOGA COARE datasets and provides direct access to data centers. (http://lwf.ncdc.noaa.gov/oa/coare/) BACKGROUND - TOGA COARE TOGA COARE was a multidisciplinary, international research effort that investigated the scientific phenomena associated with the interaction between the atmosphere and the ocean in the warm pool region of the western Pacific. The field experiment phase of the program took place from 1 November 1992 through 28 February 1993 and involved the deployment of oceanographic ships and buoys, several ship and land-based Doppler radars, multiple low and high-level aircraft equipped with Doppler radar and other airborne sensors, as well as a variety of surface based instruments for in situ observations. The following drifters were released during the TOGA COARE Intensive Observing Period (IOP): 1) MARISONDE GT Drifter Data - Meteo France Four Marisonde drifters, using Argos for location and data collection, were released during the TOGA COARE Intensive Observing Period. On an hourly basis, the buoys measured SST, wind speed, wind direction, and water temperature down to a depth of 150 meters nominal (15-m intervals). Atmospheric pressure (one-minute sampling) was measured at the same time every three hours (excepted on buoy 15500). A hydrostatic pressure sensor was located at the bottom of the bathythermic chain in order to get the depth of the lowest temperature probe (150 meters when the chain is straight). Marisonde GT Argos 14416 WMO # 52887 (Experiment # 1435) Deployment: 8 December 1992 End of Transmission: 19 July 1993 (223 days (hourly observations)) Air pressure: synoptic hours Wind Direction: failed 6 January 1993 Wind Speed: o.k. P Hydro and Thermistor chain: failed 5 January 1993 (except for 2 probes) Geographic range: 1.78S,153.57E to 4.95S, 165.11E Notes: Although most of the drifter's measurements failed in the beginning of January 1993, it continued to drift until the end of July 1993. Marisonde GT Argos 14414 WMO # 52885 (Experiment # 1435) Deployment: 9 December 1992 End of Transmission: 22 February 1993 for unknown reasons (75 days (hourly observations)) Air pressure: synoptic hours Wind Direction: o.k Wind Speed: o.k. P Hydro and Thermistor chain: o.k. Geographic range: 1.02S, 155.89E to 4.51S, 164.44E Notes: Data are correct up to that date. Marisonde GT Argos 14415 WMO #: 52885 (Experiment # 1435) Deployment: 27 January 1993 End of Transmission: 18 May 1993 (111 days (hourly observations)) Air pressure: synoptic hours Wind Direction: o.k. Wind Speed: o.k. P Hydro and Thermistor chain: not working Geographic range: 1.98S, 156.12E to 5.30S, 161.99E Notes: Sea temperature measurements failed when deployed. The buoy provided reliable atmospheric data (Air pressure and wind) until mid-May 1993 and ceased to emit in mid-September. Marisonde GT Argos 15500 WMO #: 52884 (Experiment # 1435) Deployment 27 January 1993 End Transmission: 19 February 1993, when picked up by a ship (23 days (hourly observations)) Air pressure: not measured Wind Direction: not working Wind Speed: ok P Hydro and Thermistor chain: o.k. Geographic range: 1.49S, 156.07E to 3.29S, 157.64E Notes: Wind direction measurements failed when deployed. The other measurements were correct. Data volume: approx. 1 MB For more information, please contact Pierre Blouch (blouch@meteo.ifremer.fr) at IFREMER. 2) BODEGA Drifter Data - ORSTOM Noumea Eleven French BODEGA drifters (SERPE-IESM, GUIDEL, 56, FRANCE TRISTAR) were deployed in August 1992 along the 165E meridian and in September 1992 along 156E. Seventeen additional BODEGA surface drifters were deployed in December 1992 and January/February 1993 from R/V Le Noroit along 156E, 4S-5N during the COARE IOP, two of which never transmitted any data. Deployments were coordinated with a set of surface drifters that were released by Peter Niiler from the University of California, San Diego. The datafile covers 27 of these drifters (drifter 2689 died during deployment and drifter 2688 had very few positions, even though the temperature sensors worked, so it was removed from the file). BODEGA drifters were equipped with a drogue sensor and with a mini-thermistor chain with five sensors at 2, 5, 8, 12, and 20 m. These sensors transmitted hourly temperature measurements (15-min sampling time). There was also a buoy hull sensor with a 2-hour sampling rate, which was less accurate. Data volume: 4.3 MB For more information contact Yves du Penhoat (dupenhoa@noumea.orstom.nc) at ORSTOM, Noumea. 3) SVP LAGRANGIAN Drifter Data - University of California A total of 776 ARGOS-tracked drifters, equipped with two temperature and one conductivity sensor as well as drifters equipped with one temperature sensor, were deployed between 31 October 1989 and 22 July 1994 to obtain both Lagrangian and Eulerian descriptions of the response of the momentum and salinity fields.
